Funny story:
For our 3rd date I took her to Pine
Hills Nature preserve near Shades State Park to walk the trail
to Devil's Backbone.
When we got to the top of the
backbone to see the Devil's head carved in the stone there, we
continued along what I thought was the trail.
However, I missed a turn somewhere
and we ended up lost in the woods along the creek. Sundown
was fast approaching and would have been stuck there for the
night if we couldn't find the trail back to the parking
lot. My cellphone had no signal down in the creek bed and
it was almost out of battery. In a moment of clarity I
remembered I had a compass app installed. I used it to
figure out where we needed to head to get back to the
trail-head. I sprinted ahead along the creek and a few
minutes later I found the honeycomb cliff where the trail picks
up. I shouted to Cindy and waited for her to catch up to
me. It was almost dark and there was just enough light
left for us to follow the trail back to the parking lot.
Now we enjoy camping and hiking together in parks around the
state. No primitive campsites for us though, she was used
to RV'ing with the family while her kids grew up. We stay
at electric sites with our 6 person tent and 22" tall, queen
size, self inflating air mattress. It's more like
"glamping"!
